Does smoking weed really kill your brain cells? The University of Louisville debunks the infamous myth.

This is something that many people want to know about in the cannabis community. Does smoking weed really kill your brain cells? When I posted a thread about this topic in a cannabis forum, many people were saying that the myth was false. A lot of people were saying that they smoke a lot and are not stupid. If your a stoner maybe you remember your childhood and your mother telling you not to smoke that stuff or you will "fry your brain cells".
So The Cannabis Wiki decided to investigate and see if there is any truth to these claims. So if you want to know "will smoking weed kill your brain cells?". Today you will find out..

Today we will answer the question "Does smoking weed really kill your brain cells?"

The next time your mother or anyone else tells you that smoking will make you stupid, tell them that researchers from the University of Louisville don't agree. A study that came out in January 2015 proved to the world that weed does not kill your brain cells. The study involved an MRI brain scan on 29 adults and 50 teens who used marijuana daily, and the same amount of people who don't use it.

"Groups were matched on a critical confounding variable, alcohol use, to a far greater degree than in previously published studies," the abstract states. "We acquired high-resolution MRI scans, and investigated group differences in gray matter using voxel-based morphometry, surface-based morphometry, and shape analysis in structures suggested to be associated with marijuana use, as follows: the nucleus accumbens, amygdala, hippocampus, and cerebellum. No statistically significant differences were found between daily users and nonusers on volume or shape in the regions of interest."

That is a what a researcher from the team had to say. The team stated that they were shocked to find that there was no difference in the MRI scan between people you used marijuana, and people who didn't. They even say there wasn't even a "modest effect" found in the study. That claim was debunked, just like the claim of cannabis effecting your IQ.

If back in the 80's if you asked someone will smoking weed kill your brain cells, they would've showed you the infamous commercial of the egg frying in the pan and saying "This is your brains on drugs". Further research on the subject lead us to a article on an Italian study from 2013. The study stated that a chemical in cannabis known as cannabichromene (CBC) can actually boost the functionality and availability of developing brain cells.

So now we can go back to all the cannabis forums and find all the people asking "does smoking weed really kill your brain cells?" and show them this article. The people deserve to know the truth. All this talk of smoking weed "killing" your brain cells, reminds me of the study from the Harvard University on weed helping prevent tumors. It isn't looking to good for all the people who are against the legalization of cannabis. Everyday more and more studies are coming out showing that cannabis has a lot of health benefits, and no proof of negative effects.

So basically if your ever on Quora or yahoo answers, or any other online community and you see the question 'Does smoking weed really kill your brain cells?' tell them that The Cannabis Wiki and every researcher says no! Make sure to follow us on twitter, to be the first to know about new post. Until we meet again folks.
